I’ve been a wedding photographer in Utah for about 5 years now, and I’m absolutely kicking myself that this is the first time I’ve made the drive out to the Bonneville Salt Flats. Naomi wanted something with grand views, so we debated between here and the Little Sahara sand dunes down in Nephi, UT. I would have been thrilled either way, but I couldn’t have fully imagined how incredible this shoot actually turned out. Of course I can’t take all the credit, the landscape is only maybe 35% of the session? This couple’s chemistry and love is what took these bridals from pretty good to beyond belief. Easily my favorite bridal shoot of my career — so far!
The Bride & Groom
Naomi & Spencer are just darling together. I carpooled down with them and Naomi’s mom, the genius Utah florist behind Naomi’s bouquet. We talked about music and they shared with me a few of their favorite songs from amazing artists I’d never heard of before. We stopped at a rest stop and bought bags and bags of snack food to munch on for the drive. They told me how they met, and how Spencer took Naomi to a wedding for their first date. In fact there is actually footage of them together on their first date because of the videographer at the wedding — how awesome is that? We kept our fingers crossed as we drove that the flats would have some water on them. Because dry spots would have been boring, right?
Pulling up to our location we couldn’t have been more thrilled or in awe. Reflecting the mountains and the sky, the water seemed to stretch for miles before us. Starting on the beach to keep the dress dry, we shot until we couldn’t help but get in the water. As the sun set the colors changed and the sky became magical. It was like shooting on a ripply mirror of color and light. And I’m not about to argue with a bride who doesn’t mind getting her dress wet for a few shots. Don’t worry, she had a dry cleaner on standby and ready to receive the gown that night. If you shoot here be prepared for an awful lot of salt all over you — Hunter rain boots for the win!
After the shoot, Naomi & Spencer snuggled under a blanket in the back seat watching Disney movies; a couple after my own heart. I can’t wait to get the film scans back from this shoot as well. And of course I’m 1,000x more excited for their upcoming wedding this month at the Provo City Center Temple.
